WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MIDWIFERY CARE

Broadly speaking, we use this time to get to know one another. Midwife means “with woman”, and receiving an invitation into the home of a pregnant mother is an honor we do not take lightly. Visits take place in our office and/or in your home. We talk about our philosophies and experiences, your dreams and plans, fears and difficulties. Everything always comes with a conversation: what you want, what we are doing and why.

Visits are friendly and deep. These visits are as unique as each family we serve, and always have the explicit purpose of building relationship and making you feel seen, heard, and loved. We ensure you have enough time at your prenatal visits to develop a connection with us before your birth. We often (but don’t always) attend births together as a team, so additional team members may be present at prenatal visits, such as midwifery apprentices or students from our midwifery mentorship group.

We visualize what normal, ancient birth would have looked like and how we can apply that to our modern lives. We talk about the many variations that are perfectly normal for mama and baby: what happens in variations and what are the possibilities of benefits, risks, alternatives? Birth itself is a mystery. Prenatal care is not, and families should be the centers of creation for their care during pregnancy.

Often we review intricacies of what previous pregnancies and birth experiences were like… processing these can help understanding or ultimately healing. The use of positive language in the experience of birth and parenting is of great importance! Reemphasizing this at each visit is our goal.

Birth itself is a mystery. Prenatal care is not. What families often need most is TEA (time, energy, attention) in order to feel nourished during their pregnancies.

PRENATAL CARE

We work as a team and Carey may attend prenatal visits and births with an assistant and/or student midwife. While in a family’s home during the Birthing Time, our team remains quiet in voice and in mind; the mother is the one with the birthing song, and all others in attendance should be listening. We strive to give the birthing family space, yet remain fully available and present to their needs. A woman often needs time alone with her partner, to maximize the flow of oxytocin. Following the wisdom of Michel Odent, we facilitate the physiological needs of birth: Quiet, Darkness, Privacy, Safety, Warmth.

We do our best to find a balance between being unobtrusive and attentive. Birth is an incredibly intuitive space for families, and we work to hone our own intuitive responses to the family and their needs. We are happy to rub backs or heads or feet, to pour water on bellies, to whisper soothing words, to be held onto or hung from, or to mindfully witness from just outside the family’s bubble. Mothers or their partners often catch their own babies, which we love. How magical for a loved ones’ hands to be the first to touch a baby as they enter this world!

After the baby and placenta are born, we make a meal and a tea, help the new mother with a shower, and prepare her bed (aka The Throne). After the baby has nursed and feels settled, we do a full newborn wellness exam right on the bed, in the presence of the family. If desired, we prepare the placenta for medicine-making, or do prints. We tidy up any mess created by the birth. We generally stay for a few hours and take our leave when the new family are ready for a nice, long nap.

If birth has taught us nothing else, it is this; people facilitate their own transformations. We believe the most effective birth attendant will leave a family knowing that their presence was welcomed but not necessary.

BIRTHING AT HOME

Postpartum visits take place (typically) at 24-36 hours, 3 days, 2 weeks, 6 weeks (additional visits are possible as needed). The first few visits occur in your home, and your 6 week visit may occur in your home or in our home office. We offer breastfeeding support, vaginal steams, newborn CST and myofascial release, as well as postpartum womb massage to all new families. Extended breastfeeding or postpartum support is also available, as needed.

Postpartum is a time of BIG changes. Everyone in the family transforms, and this can be challenging. All true transformation is! Each baby is different and there is no standard manual, but understanding newborn rhythms and what are truly normal parameters (not what most of us have been taught!) can leave everyone with more acceptance and peace about the adjustments in a household with a new member.
