MEET THE WOMEN OF ROOTED BIRTH

Midwife

CAREY GLENN, CPM, LM

I am a mother, midwife, educator, body worker, community herbalist, and rhythmic therapist. I seek to weave these passions together by creating unique offerings for my intimate community of clients and the wider world through online trainings, speaking events + film screenings. In addition to using my own birth experiences to deepen my understanding and empathy for birthing and postpartum mothers, I am grateful to have happily nursed my babies for a total of 6 years as well as counseled many other nursing mothers through simple and complex breastfeeding concerns. I continue to deepen my study and understanding of lactation as a part of my services for women.

I was featured as the unobtrusive and hands-off midwife in the film These Are My Hours, and now work behind the scenes as a co-producer and eduational and outreach coordinator.

I work as a musician and co-director of Sacred Heart Beats, an improvisational drumming group that also practices as a service organization. We perform in team building experiences, share in mindful communication drum circles in school settings, and connect individuals with complex or special needs to community drum circles. We train facilitators in our method of facilitation. We will release a recording of labor and birth inspired percussion pieces in 2023.

I am supported by my partner and best friend, Scott, and our beautiful blended family of five children. I am eternally grateful for the support of my mom and dad and extended family for knitting together life when I am away.

MAKAYLA COLE, CPM, LM

Backup Midwife

My passion is in helping families feel empowered. Our bodies and birth are so beautifully designed and I am honored to be a space holder in the sacred space of birth. I believe in full autonomy and families making fully informed decisions about all aspects of their care. My role is to provide resources, information and to support you during your journey.

I have 3 children of my own and am married to my best friend, Nate. We spend our free time on our homestead where we garden, homeschool and try to fill each day with exploring, learning and being together. My personal hobbies include sewing, reading and drinking coffee!

TAYLOR SHAFFER, LMA

Licensed Midwife Apprentice

I am a student midwife, holistic doula and home birth mama! My passions include birth, postpartum, ancestral nutrition and traditional homemaking. When I’m not supporting other mamas, you can catch me baking sourdough, drinking raw milk, or grabbing lunch at the Swamp Rabbit Café with my husband, Tyler, and our sweet baby, Adeline.

I hold an intense conviction for supporting women through all stages of the perinatal experience; but I feel particularly drawn to postpartum work and preparing women for the transition from maiden to mother, or mother again. When a new baby is born, so is a mother, and we often forget how important it is to care for her during this period. I believe new mothers everywhere deserve to be held and cared for by the women around them in the same way that they hold and care for their own babies.

I have also taken a profound interest in holistic nutrition over the years and feel deeply passionate about incorporating nutrient-dense, real-food nourishment into pregnancy and postpartum. I find so much joy in helping guide mothers through this part of their experience and working together to support their overall wellbeing through food.

PAEONIA SHERROW

I am a student midwife, bodyworker, circle holder and mentor. My devotion is my life work. My prayer is to weave the Holy with the Mundane, the Temple with the Body and the Woman with her Dignity as life giver.

I am certified as an Innate Postpartum Care Provider, Matrona Holistic Doula, Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy Practitioner, licensed massage therapist #17214 and trained in the Way of Council.

I come alive in the forest, in song, in ceremony and prayer, tending to thresholds, and beholding the brilliance of the human spirit in honest expression of any kind.

CIERRA NIELSEN

Certified Birth + Postpartum Doula, Lactation Counselor

I am a mother, teacher, birth and postpartum doula certified through Rooted Birth’s trauma-informed doula course. I am an accredited La Leche League Leader, trained in breastfeeding counseling. I believe mother to mother support is sacred and how you are cared for in your postpartum time will set the tone and trajectory of your motherhood.

I am also trained in craniosacral and myofascial release therapy. I believe in the body’s innate desire to heal itself and consider myself to be a conduit and witness to this.

I am supported by husband, Tom and together we share 3 incredible daughters whom I happily nursed for a combined 7+ years. Where some of those years were spent tandem nursing. I am also a trained Montessori primary guide, and homeschooling our children.

I am a student of herbal, homeopathic and holistic knowledge. I enjoy time in nature with my family, a warm cup of tea, and creative homemaking.
